Interview with the Author

Q - So, what makes the Leopold Blake series special?

A - It's a mix of things, really. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are usually private detective novels, any of the thousands of thrillers and mysteries best sellers, and, of course, books featuring your classic pulp heroes. Basically, anything with a kick-butt attitude and fast-paced style gets my vote.

The Leopold Blake books are a great mix of these genres. You'll find the series focuses on the mystery and thriller / private detective genre overall, with a couple of financial thrillers thrown in for good measure, some political thrillers, and a serial killer novel or two to keep things interesting!

Overall, the Leopold Blake series is designed to keep you turning the pages - and I've made sure there's never a dull moment.

Q - What order should I read the books in?

A - I’ve written the series so you can read the books in any order, and all the story threads will tie up nicely by the time you're finished. If you do want to read them in order, I'd suggest the following sequence

- Paydown (prequel)
- Wanted
- Panic
- Departed
- Ratio
- Fallen (coming soon)

Q - So, why should readers give these books a try?

A - Because the Leopold Blake series is a fast, fun, thrill-ride that takes no prisoners! Each of the books has hit the top ten bestsellers list on for Crime Thrillers, and each have been featured on 's Thrillers 100 Must Reads list - which is no mean feat.

Ultimately, readers who enjoy lightning-fast pacing with a plot that twists and turns all the way to the end will get a kick out of this series.

Q - Can readers get the whole series in one go?

A - Sure. I've put together a few bundles if people want to save a little moolah and grab all the books in one swoop. Check out my author page here at for more details, and a full list of my available titles.

And thanks for reading!

Departed A Private Investigator Series of Crime and Suspense Thrillers Book 3 edition by Nick Stephenson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Short and to the point, that's how I like to write reviews. Here goes.

Leopold Blake continues to do what he does best, see the details that others don't. In this sequel, Nick Stephenson added a slightly more descriptive aspect to his writing and I for one enjoyed this. This book brought us to murder scenes through the eyes of a murderer. A bit more descriptive than I remember from Stephenson in Panic, the first in the series, this was welcome to me in Departed. If I'm going to read about a killer, give me the dark, gory stuff. Stephenson did just that. I still enjoyed the banter between Leopold and Jerome though the relationship seemed a bit different in this book.

Stephenson writes great fight scenes and spreads them throughout the book keeping me engaged and the pages turning.

I did see most of the plot twists coming and though that usually sours me on a book, I was wrong about one thing and that kept me guessing through the rest of the story.

Bottom line, Departed is a great second piece from Nick Stephenson and you can't go wrong with the Leopold Blake series. It is a slightly different style than the first book, but I think it is just Stephenson developing as a writer and Leopold growing and changing as a character. I enjoyed it and I know you will too.

Departed A Private Investigator Series of Crime and Suspense Thrillers Book 3 edition by Nick Stephenson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Although this novel had a hit the ground running type of plot, and it maintained that pace right up to the end I felt like there was something missing. For me the characters didn’t drive this story; The easy read nature, the plot pace and the clever twists involved as the book moved along drove my reading of this. This is the first novel I have read in this series, so I may have missed a chunk of the back story for the individual players, they presented as rather flat. This was touted as a thriller, though it contained some graphic scenes it didn’t quite pull that off.
The story ends without and end. This book is one of those where at the end of the book the story isn't finished. I haven't read any of the earlier books in the series so wasn't expecting that. That aside, the novel was easy to follow and enjoyable. I wished there was more play with the supporting characters, Mary and Jerome. There is a lot of potential there to make them more fully characters in there own right rather than props to Leopold's character. That said, read it and enjoy.
Leopold Blake is self described as as the world's smartest criminologist. In this story he acts very stupid. Despite having a huge, mean bodyguard he runs off on several occasions and gets beaten up stabbed, stuck with a shard of glass, etc. It boggles the imagination that he is still alive at the end of the book. The story concerns a serial killer in London and the reader has to suspend his credulity to believe that Blake and his cohorts would actually be called to solve the crime and take over for the Metropolitan Police. Nevertheless, the story is fun and to say anymore would be a spoiler.
Leopold Blake, billionaire tycoon and detective goes to London with his friends.
They have been called in to help locate a modern day Jack the ripper...or is that true ?
What is really going on and who all does it involve ?
Just when I think I have it all figured out, something else happens. Not to worry though, there are plenty of clues... oops, maybe too many.
If you like twist and turns, if you like adrenalin to flow, if you want to stay up all night reading because you began reading after work...this is your book.
I LOVED this book !!
Thank you Nick Stephenson.
After reading Panic and the hold it had on me, I could barely wait to read Departed to see how it did me and I am even more of a fan of Nick Stephenson. Departed kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out who the killer was, Nick proved me wrong. The ending surprised me. Leopold, Mary & Jerome have their hands full when asked to come to Londan to help find a serial killer. After multiple murders and thinking they've found their man, they find out they didn't until the end. Poor Leopold, he just can't keep from getting hurt no matter how much Mary and Jerome try to prevent it. This book is a MUST have.
Enough twists and turns to keep me interested.

The only negative, is knowing that the author is British, but the book is set in NYC, I found a few instances where the British word for something would be used in place of the US word. An example, in the US, we 'go into a room'. In the book, the character 'went through to the office'. Another example, and I'm not sure if it was this book or one of the author's other books, in referencing 'blinds' on the windows, he used the British term 'shutters' on the windows rattling against the glass. Small issues, but, there you have it.

I'm currently reading all of Stephenson's books, and each is better than the last. You won't be disappointed. Just don't pay attention to the "Britishism's"!
I really liked this book. It had a lot of action, especially nearer the end. It was definitely a book I could not put down (nor did I want to). Leopold Blake took a little getting used to. He has money (and is not afraid to use it), connections with the 'powers that be', a bodyguard whose advice he continually ignores, and the uncanny ability to irritate his American partner, Mary. I could easily visualize the scenes described. The writing was very good and kept me on the edge of my seat. Several times I thought I knew "whodunit", but each time I found out that I was wrong.I am looking forward to reading more from this author. Good editing. The only con I have is that for those of you who dislike violence and gore, this is definitely not the book for you. It is quite graphic in spots (but then so is everything on TV today), so stear clear if you are squeamish. Otherwise, everyone else ENJOY!!
